Chapter 423
He tossed his suit jacket onto a chair, kicked off his shoes, and slid under the covers. Reaching out an arm, Selena instinctively nestled closer, finding her spot against him before drifting off. His large hand gently traced the back of hers, soothing her to sleep. Selena felt chilled, but Everett's warmth wrapped around her like a cozy blanket, quickly thawing her cold hands and feet. Even with her eyes closed, her mind was a whirlwind of thoughts.
The secret of her fake pregnancy wouldn't last long. In a little over three months, it would be glaringly obvious, and Everett still hadn't given her a straight answer about skipping the isolated island for a safer stay in France. If she ended up on that remote island, her chances of escaping were slim to none. She never underestimated Everett's sway.
But France was a different story. With Everett buried in work, he couldn't just up and leave the country, which meant he couldn't join her abroad right away. If she could get to France first, then switch her route to Germany, Dr. Campbell assured her that Germany was his turf, a place where Everett's influence wouldn't reach.
Even if Everett tried to track her down, the world's a big place, and deliberately covering her tracks wouldn't be a walk in the park for him. Mateo was already in Germany, waiting for her. Her only mission now was to convince Everett to let her go to France for the sake of the pregnancy.
Everett, holding her delicate form, found himself nodding off. But with a meeting to attend, he gingerly shifted her from his arms after she fell asleep, cupped her serene face in his hands, and gave her a tender, desireless kiss. Then, he headed off to his study. Once the meeting wrapped up and he had plowed through a stack of documents, darkness had already fallen outside. He picked up his coffee, only to discover it was stone-cold. He leaned back in his leather chair, feeling a bit weary, removed his glasses, and rubbed his temples.
Back in the day, no amount of work
ever wore him out or frustrated him; he always saw it as a challenge,
tackling it with boundless energet
and passion. Now, the endless tasks were starting to get on his nerves.
Every now and then, his thoughts would wander to Selena and the child, making him eager to wrap things up and spend time with them. He chuckled to himself. There was a time he couldn't stand such clingy behavior, and now he found himself right in the thick of it.
Had his outlook changed, or had his feelings for Selena deepened? But the one who occupied his heart had always been that young girl... Can love really shift gears like that?
Everett's gaze drifted to the night sky outside, his mind miles away. Suddenly, his phone buzzed incessantly. He glanced at it, spotting a barrage of messages from Margot.
"Everett, why aren't you picking up? Do you really buy into what Selena's saying and not trust me?"
"Fine, I'll prove it. I've got someone retrieving the mall's surveillance
footage. Come to my place, and we'l watch it together. You'll see Selena's up to something. I'm the one who'sNôvelDrama.Org: owner of this content.

Everett stared at the messages, his eyes lingering on the words "ulterior motives."
