The CEO's Empathy Pregnancy Pains

Chapter 237 Venturing Alone into Emerald Lake Manor

The next second, Emily took advantage of the security guard's distraction and slipped in, her small frame making it easy.

Michael was in the bedroom, buried in paperwork. He sighed deeply when he heard the noise and set his pen down.

Emily burst in, the security guard hot on her heels, shouting, "Mrs. Smith, you're really putting me in a tough spot. Mr. Smith, I didn't let her in, she just..." The poor security guard was in a real bind.

He kept apologizing to both Michael and Emily.

Emily felt for him, but she was determined to see Michael today.

This issue needed to be settled; Michael couldn't dodge it, and neither could she.

Plus, Emily genuinely cared about Michael. She couldn't lie to herself or ignore her conscience.

Ignoring the guard's pleas, Emily went straight to Michael. "Are you okay?"

Michael couldn't help but chuckle coldly at the scene. Seeing them both standing there awkwardly, he chose to ignore Emily and waved the security guard off, saying calmly, "Your bonus for this month is gone. Leave." The guard's face fell, and he sighed as he walked out.

Emily knew Michael was aiming his frustration at her. She frowned and asked directly, "Do you really have to do this?"

"Do what?" Michael shot back without hesitation. "You told me to leave, to stop meddling in your life. Emily, you're really something. Look who's meddling now."

Saying this felt like a stab to Michael's heart.

But he had to push Emily away.

No one knew how much his leg hurt, or how much his heart was breaking.

"But you got hurt because of me. I should take care of you until your leg heals, then I'll go."

Emily stepped forward.

Michael cut her off coldly. "Don't flatter yourself. How do you know it was for you, Emily? Sometimes I really don't get you. You don't appreciate my kindness, but now you want to take care of me."

"Let me be clear, even if it was Ava or the security guard standing there, I would have saved them. Got it? It wasn't about you, so just leave and don't come back." Michael picked up his pen again.

After those harsh words, he buried himself back in his work.

But only he knew how much he was shaking. He wanted Emily to stay, but he had to push her away with those cruel words.

He didn't want her to feel guilty, or to stay out of obligation.

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

She knew Michael had never liked her from the start.

What Abigail said about those changes was just a fleeting illusion. How could Michael ever fall for her?

It was all a joke.

From the beginning, Emily was just a joke.

Emily said, "I won't take up much of your time. And don't get it twisted, I'm just making a meal to show my appreciation. Eat it or don't."

Leaving that cold remark, Emily swallowed her hurt and was about to leave when she heard the click of high heels approaching. She stopped instinctively. Michael was drawn to the sound of footsteps too. He was caught off guard, not expecting anyone at this hour.

He turned to look at the door.

"My son already said he wouldn't eat, so why bother making it?"

It was Scarlett.novelbin

She had a habit of coming and going from Emerald Lake Manor as she pleased, something Emily had momentarily forgotten.

Realizing this, Emily instinctively took a step back.

Scarlett walked gracefully from the shadows into the light. Her white patent leather high heels, adorned with what looked like expensive diamonds, were hard to miss.

Emily glanced down at her own canvas shoes, feeling a pang of inadequacy, and took a few more steps back.

Her mind drifted to three years ago when she first met Scarlett.

Back then, she had just graduated from college, filled with dreams and hopes for the future. She never imagined that falling in love and wanting to marry into a wealthy family would change everything. Emily suddenly felt she should have known better.

No matter how hard she tried, she could never measure up to these people born into wealth.

Now, Emily was the director of JM, the nominal Mrs. Smith, and the secretary to the president of Smith Corporation... but what did all these titles mean?

Even though Scarlett had been detained, suppressed by Michael, and scolded by Mason, once the storm passed, she would still be the lady of the Smith family, and she was still Michael and Veda's mother. That was an unchanging fact. At that moment, Emily had a chilling thought.

She thought of the child in her belly and her current situation... but quickly dismissed the idea.

She wasn't Scarlett. She wouldn't use her child or compromise her values for personal gain.

With that resolve, Emily straightened her back and looked Scarlett in the eye.

By then, Scarlett had stopped. With her fiery red lips and heavy makeup, she first glanced at Michael, then looked at Emily with a faint expression. "Emily, you caused my son to get hurt like this. I haven't held you accountable, which is already giving you enough respect. Don't push your luck, and stop coming to Emerald Lake Manor to seduce my son. Leave now, before I have to kick you out."

Scarlett felt she hadn't been harsh enough. Seeing Emily unmoved, she steeled herself and spoke even more sharply.

Her relationship with Michael was already strained. Could it get any worse?

Scarlett added, "My son's been paying your mother's medical bills all this time. Now that you've done such a rebellious and immoral thing, the Smith family really can't tolerate you. You should divorce my son and take your mother out of Emerald City Hospital. You two don't deserve to enjoy the Smith family's benefits."

Michael interjected, "Mom!"

Scarlett ignored him and continued, "Am I wrong? Michael, you're my son. How long are you going to be weak? How long are you going to be controlled by this woman? Emily, if you're smart, you'll listen to me and leave. You don't want your mother to see you being so useless..."

Scarlett's words were cutting.

She just wanted Emily to leave.

But unexpectedly, Emily retorted, her words firm and resolute.
