Chapter 80
Dr. Sanders and Ember were already eating while Cedrick just watched them. The doctor offered him food, but he let them eat instead. He wasn’t hungry yet and was used to situations like this, sometimes going three days without eating due to investigations. He figured the two needed it more, especially if things got chaotic when Ronnie received his message.
“Isn’t it a bit late for breakfast?” Cedrick asked the doctor. He thought Emerson had been depriving him of proper nourishment. He admired the doctor for not giving up on Ember after all those years he cared for her.
“This is the usual time they bring my food,” Dr. Sanders replied. Cedrick said nothing further and went to the door, leaving it slightly ajar, hoping to hear something from either above or below.
He knew the police might arrive at any moment, so he began to prepare himself. He needed to protect the two of them as best he could. Not because it was his job but because he wanted Mr. Landers and Ember to reunite. He wanted to see his boss and friend finally happy after so long searching for the woman he loved.
He looked at Ember and couldn’t help but smile. While Mr. Landers resembled Emerald, young Morgan had inherited her mother’s demeanor, actions, and character. They both appeared modest and respectable.
After eating, Cedrick began briefing them on what to do if Emerson’s men found them. He reminded the two to stay close to him and not to stray if chaos ensued, making it easier for him to assist and protect them.
Then they heard the sound of footsteps. Dr. Sanders opened the door slightly to see if anyone was coming. However, they soon realized that the noise was coming from above.
Dr. Sanders wanted to peek out, but Cedrick stopped him. “We don’t know who’s up there; let’s wait,” said the detective, and both the doctor and Ember agreed. “If it’s Emerson’s men, just follow their instructions, and I’ll follow you. Do not show fear or anxiety so they won’t suspect I’m here.”
Again, the two nodded, fully placing their trust in Cedrick. They knew and felt he wouldn’t abandon them, so they followed whatever he told them.
Just as the detective wanted, they waited, and all three exchanged glances when they heard footsteps coming down the stairs. Cedrick quickly hid to avoid being seen and ensure the two wouldn’t be endangered if Emerson’s men arrived.
“Who are you?” Dr. Sanders asked, surprised when the door suddenly opened, revealing Liam. Cedrick heard this and peeked out to see who had arrived.
“Mr. Liam!” he exclaimed. The doctor and Ember turned to the newcomer as Jace and Ronnie appeared behind him.
“Did you get my text this morning?” Cedrick asked Ronnie.
“Just now. Why didn’t you tell me last night?” Ronnie asked, confused, as Jace and Liam approached Dr. Sanders and Ember to ensure they were okay.
“There’s no signal here. It’s a good thing I texted you last night before I came down and met them,” the detective replied. Let’s leave before Emerson’s men catch up to us.”
They moved quickly, and when they reached the top, the police were already waiting. The doctor and Ember breathed a sigh of relief, knowing they were safe. “Ahm, you’re Mr. Higginson, right?” Dr. Sanders asked Jace once they were outside.
“Yes, why?” Jace replied, asking, and Dr. Sanders shook his head. He thought Jace must be on their side, especially since Cedrick told them they he and Emerald were okay now.© 2024 Nôv/el/Dram/a.Org.
Ember was placed in an ambulance, and young Higginson followed to accompany her to the hospital. He left Liam and the two detectives to chase after Emerson, who had quickly escaped when the commotion began. At the same time, some police officers were sent to the Morgan family’s apartment where Merly was, assuming she was involved in Ember’s kidnapping.
Meanwhile, Jace called his wife to inform her that her mother was safe and that they were going to the hospital to have specialists check Ember and ensure her health. Dr. Sanders was taken care of in the next hospital bed as well, even though he said he was fine.
“Jace!” Emerald shouted when she saw her husband standing in the emergency room where a specialist was examining Ember. Young Higginson met his wife, embraced her, and gently kissed her forehead before leading her to her mother.
“Nanny-I mean, Mom…” young Morgan said, her voice trembling with emotion. Her mother smiled and opened her arms, causing Emerald to embrace her tightly, crying like a child.
Standing behind them was Mr. Landers, holding Ace, who Jace then took from him. Next to him was Mr. Ferguson, who was also crying as he watched the mother and daughter continue to cry in each other’s arms.
Emerald eventually let go of her mother, allowing her father and grandfather to approach Ember. The latter was stunned upon seeing the only man she had ever loved. She sat up as Harry finally reached her hospital bed, tearfully meeting his embrace.
“I miss you so much, Ember, sweetheart,” Mr. Landers said in a loving voice, hoarse from holding back tears.
“I miss you too, sweetheart. I’m sorry for being so stubborn and not following your wishes.”
“No, it was my fault. I should have told you the truth so you wouldn’t have thought you meant nothing to me. I’m the one who pushed you away,” Mr. Landers said, unable to hold back his tears anymore.
“Dad,” Ember said after hugging the man she loved.
“I’m so sorry, my dear. I’m the root cause of all this. If I hadn’t forced you into marriage, you and Harry wouldn’t have had a misunderstanding, and you wouldn’t have left,” Mr. Ferguson said in a long, remorseful statement before embracing his only daughter.
Emerald, Jace, and Ace watched them with happy smiles, witnessing their reunion. Now, young Morgan’s heart could finally be at peace, knowing she had found her long-lost nanny, who turned out to be her real mother after meeting her biological father and grandfather.
