Chapter 25 Psycho Love
I was told by my sister-in-law on the phone that her husband was about to jump off the top floor, he said that he had wronged me, our parents, his wife and many others more. He was sitting on the rooftop watching the city with no hope in his eye.
My sister-in-law was crying hard when I get there, telling me that he cooked her a nice meal after which he started rambling nonsense. He told her that he would be out trying to borrow some money, but ended up trying to kill himself.
He started crying as well when he saw me and said:"Sorry, Nance...I've been dragging you down all my life, and I'll put a stop to it. Would you please tell mom and dad that I'll return the favor in my afterlife if I were privileged enough to be their son again at that time...I, I have failed them so much...
But it looked all so fake to me, like series of drama, each one based on how much money he owed, ranging from crying to kneeling down and begging for forgiveness. This time? This time is playing suicide.
I smiled and said:"Go ahead, it would be the best thing you could do to this world."
That shocked my sister-in-law and firefighters, for they were expecting me to talked him out of his will of death.
"Nance? What are you talking about?" Exclaimed him, eyes blinking with cunning. I knew he would never take that jump, his whole body had been trembling for a long time knowing how high it was there.
"I mean it. Just jump before you waste anymore precious resource of out mother nature. See that big cushion down there? Aim well and don't land on it. And don't worry, I'll take care of mom and dad, so, off you go." I walked slowly to him.
"You...is that what you've been wishing for?" He uttered, looked at me with great sadness.
“You're nothing but a burden in my life, now bigger after this trouble you got me into. Just die, that would be enough to pay the money you owe from the usury." Word by word, he was pissed off and jumped down and walked toward me. Before he got any closer, the firefighters swarmed up and pin him down, just in case he started playing suicide again.Content © NôvelDrama.Org.
His wife looked at me with great disbelief:"How...how did you make it?"
I smiled and said:"I'm his sister, and I know his fear of heights, jumping off the roof would be on the last one on his list even if he really wants to die. His useless if you don't count how much he treasure his life."
She looked at me gracefully and said:"He nearly drove me mad with all the money he owed. Nance, dose it really need to cost his life to pay those people back?"
I took the cheque out of my pocket and handed it over to her: "I've got the money, don't worry."
The disbelief on his face looked even more escalated:"Really?"
I nodded: "This thing is settled. And this is the last time of me helping him, if he ever does this again, I'll just let it be."
"Of course, and this won't happen again, trust me." She was still trying do defend her husband, after which she followed him home.
I put an end to the drama.
When the crowd dispersed, I was stopped by two policemen when I was about to return the cheque to Qi Ouyang, they said I was reported to have committed robbery.
They took me to the police station before I could say anything in my defense, and the cheque became the evidence. So it turned out that it was all because of Qi, she set me up, for I didn't agree to leave Vince when I took money from her.
It was true that I was rude when I took the money, which is recorded in the security camera. I knew what Qi wanted: she wanted me to back down. I could be sentenced to a lifetime in prison, it was a million-buck cheque.
The layer arranged a meeting. She had the same old haughtiness on her face while putting her fake smile on as if she's the kindest person in the world.
"How's the food during your detention, Miss Mo?" She sneered.
"Not bad."I replied, indifferently.
"A million, think about how long that would keep you imprisoned." She giggled spitefully, "Your penniless arrogance would ruin your life." "What's the point of all these?" I despised, "There was not, nor is, any grudge between us, you're trying to kill me just because of a man?"
"I don't want to kill anyone, sis. But if someone knows not how to behave herself, she must be disciplined." She chuckled, "Oh, one more thing: I've told Vince's grandma about you committing the robbery, guess what her reaction is?"
"What the hell do you want?" She nearly suffocated me, never had I seen a villain like this in my life. Maybe I was protected too well by Jerry in that three years.
"Take the money and leave Vince for good."She said, laying bare her purpose eventually.
For good? I was born here, in Fu City, where else can I be living? Abroad? I was confused by her words.
"And don't ever wish that Vince would come and get you out of here. You've been here for a day, and Vince is in a meeting that would last for at least four days. It's your choice, take the money and help your brother or just wait for him and his wife being killed under the pressure of usury while you staying in prison rotting! If I were you, I would never give everything away just for a man." Said Qi, squinting her eyes as there was great confidence in her voice.
It's like she had planned everything, maybe it was also part of it putting my brother under tremendous debt.
It was possible, since he would never dare owing anyone a million bucks. Maybe it was the relationship between me and Vince that complicated everything.
"Was this all your booby-trap?" I said, staring into her eyes.
But the confidence remained in her voice:"Bingo, but it's too late now."
"Is it really necessary to do all these things just to make me leave Vince?" I was shocked, for the spite and cruelty lying under this seemingly gorgeous and noble woman.
She suddenly put on a cold face and drew herself near me and uttered: "I've loved Vince for nearly all my life, and you dared crawl up his bed? I'm telling you, Nance, there's more than enough ways of torturing people on my list, and destroying the life of your family is also on it. Would you like to give it a try?"
"How dare..." I barely replied as tears were swelling up.
"If I were not mistaken, your dad was in a bad health condition and your mom's working in a supermarket. How about me telling them what you've done to me and see..."
"I'll take your money." I compromised, hearts felt like being burnt and feelings all collapsed. I uttered again as tears ran down my face:”I'll take it...” My family is my Achilles' heel, and she found it.
She flapped my face sneeringly and said:"Good girl. You'll be free again soon and I'll settle down your brother's trouble. But remember: you'll never want to know what I would do to you if you go back on your promise."
She took a glance at me when she left the detention center, of which the coldness in her eyes would be in my memory forever.
I was released soon and my brother's debt was cleared, and she gave me an extra cheque of a million bucks.
I headed back to my apartment, to the place where there was so much memory of joy of me being together with Vince. I couldn't help but cry. We're not the same kind of people, all the love, and his promises were just so transient.
I bury my head between my legs, and let the tears drop.
But I heard a sound of keys opening my door. I stood up, stopped crying and fixed my eyes on the door knob.
It was Vince.
I was shocked. I wiped away my tears and asked:”How...why, are you back?"
Qi said he wouldn't be back in at least four days.
Looking gloomy, he stepped up and hugged my tightly:"You're not answering my call, and your phone was power off."
I didn't tell him that my phone was actually taken for a while. He just showed up before I got to charge it.
I lifted my head up and took a look at his face where there was fatigue and anxiety, touched it and asked: "You're back because of this?"
"Of course." He whispered, panting from his hurry. I started crying again, but it was out of joy.
But Qi's face and her words rose in my mind again, and I panicked.
"Don't be...don't be so nice to me!" I pushed him away and turned my back on him. If he still treated me like that I may never be able to leave him, but still Qi's psycho love toward him terrified me.
He walked near again, hugged me from the back and whispered:"Honey? Are you just too happy to see me?"
I frowned and stayed silent.
