Chapter 34
The smoke rose into the air and I stared at the flames that were erupting from the pyre. Around me, all the pack members howled for their lost Beta. Tears streamed down my face but I didn't make a sound. My thoughts focused only on the fire that now allowed his soul to be released from his body. Allowing his soul to be reborn again. It hurt to breathe but it had nothing to do with the smoke billowing up.
One after another, they bowed their heads and tossed flowers into the center of the blaze. The flowers evaporated nearly immediately in the heat but everyone came forward. I stood off to the side, my part as Alpha already done. Rose went up last with Cory. He threw a flower into the center and so did she. True to her word though, she never looked over at me. She just turned and walked back into the forest. Cory left her side for a moment and came over to me.
"Alpha..."
I didn't look away from the fire. "You should be with your mate, Gamma."
"Rose, she will come around. She will..."
“Stop, Gamma. She has every right to never speak to me again. I've done nothing but be a disappointment to her."
Out of my peripheral, I could see his eyes widen. “Zeke, that's..."
"Owen is taking over. He will be Alpha. I recommended you to stay as Gamma."
"Alpha! No!"
This time, I did look at him, tearing my eyes away from the fire. "You have been an exceptional Gamma. You deserve the title. Owen would be remiss not to have you as a voice as leadership. It will be his decision, but I just put in my recommendation."
His eyes welled up. "You have been an exceptional Alpha. I know you blame yourself, but..."
"Go to your mate, Gamma." I ordered him this time and he stared at me for a moment before turning and following after Rose into the forest.
My eyes went back to the fire and I clasped my hands behind my back. It was about five minutes after the entire pack cleared out when I was surprised to see the Golden Moon pack walk out of the forest. All of them stepped up to the pyre and bowed. Each one threw a flower into the fire and I tried not to let the tears come forward.
AJ, Jax, Lucy and Bryan left back into the forest but Auri, Morgan and Hector stayed. All three of them stood in front of the fire. Hector and Morgan both had a hand on Auri's shoulder.
"One should be so lucky to have a pack to care about them enough to build a pyre." Hector said quietly, looking over at Morgan.
"As a vampire, there is nothing left when we die. So this is unnecessary."
There was a quiet as I'm sure Auri spoke up.
"Maybe. I wouldn't mind keeping this as a tradition though. It seems like a good way to send off the warriors if you have the ability to." Hector sighed. "I think I'm with Cub on this one. A viking funeral fits our location much better. It's the same concept. Letting our body be destroyed to allow our souls to not be tethered to it anymore."
Auri shook her head but whatever she said visibly upset the two men beside her. Hector took her face in his hands.
"You deserve a life of happiness, Auri. You can't just say that. Being reborn don't mean your carrying the pain this life has brought with you."
My eyes looked back at the fire. I was never close with my brother or my father but they were still family. After losing them, the only people who made me feel like I still had family were Leo and Rose. The two of them helped me and now I felt the true loneliness. It started to creep in as I helped Keith set up the pyre this morning and then all through the ceremony.
Closing my eyes, I started to sink into the feeling when I felt an arm loop around mine. A hand fell to my shoulder as well and I opened my eyes. Auri was holding onto my arm while Hector was standing next to me, his hand on me while Morgan stood next to him. They didn't say a word, just looked at the fire in front of us. I looked back at the fire.
'You aren't alone, Ezekiel.'
How she knew what I was feeling, I didn't know, but I was glad. I was glad for their presence. As we stood there, I mourned the loss of my best friend but also the loss of my pack. It was more likely that I would never come back here after I left. This pack that I protected more than half my life at this point. Not a single one of them moved or shifted, they didn't rush me. They didn't say anything as they just stood by my side.
After a couple hours, the fire had lulled but Keith was still stoking it, making sure it burned long enough and hot enough. Taking a breath, I raised my head.
'Gamma?'
'Yes, Alpha?' Cory answered immediately.
I sighed. 'Please take Rose and the child out of the pack house for a couple hours. Call the Elders, my mother, Owen's mother, and Kaden. I would like you there as well but if Rose does not allow it, it's fine.'
'Yes, Alpha.'
I cut the mind link and rubbed my eyes. "I need to finish up some last minute things. What time are we leaving?"
“As soon as you are ready, Ezekiel. No sooner. If you need to take your time, it's fine. We will wait."
Shaking my head, I smiled at Hector. "No, this shouldn't take long. I'd rather leave as soon as possible." My eyes glanced over the pyre. "I don't have anything left holding me here."
'Would you like us to come with you?' Auri looked up at me.
I didn't say anything for a moment. "If...you and Hector could come. I can enact the pack transition while we are there." Turning to Morgan, I smiled. “As much as I don't think they would mind my grandfather-in-law coming, you being a vampire might freak them out a little.”
Morgan outright laughed. “Grandfather-in-law? That's a new one. You can call me Grandpa as Vale does or Papa, as Auri does. Either way, I am not offended. It's not common practice for a vampire to be part of a pack. I'm sure no Alpha besides Auri has tried it."
'Go help the boys pack up and you can drive down the pack house to pick us up.'
Morgan nodded and disappeared from next us. Hector squeezed my shoulder. Turning, I walked back through the forest to the pack house. Auri walked next to me and Hector trailed behind just a bit.
"Thank you for coming. You didn't have to."
'Of course we did. We do our best to take care of our own. When we can't, we do the best for the ones left behind.' She smiled at me.
Shaking my head, I smiled back. "I'll be honest, I'm a little jealous of Vale. That he had such a family growing up."
Something flashed across Auri's face as she turned her head to face forward. 'I wish I could say that Vale's childhood was perfect. But sadly, the Alpha King gene tore our family apart. He struggled and I did my best to help him through it. Hector, Bryan and Morgan played a big part but he lost the close relationship with his dad and his older brother.'
"Logan loved Vale but it became hard as an Alpha to bare his neck ever time his son walked into the room. And despite Vale telling his brother he wanted no part as Alpha of our pack, Týr was angry and fearful he would lose his position that he felt was his birthright."
Hector followed up and I realized Auri was mind linking both of us at the same time, just as she had done with Morgan a couple days ago. I wondered if she just repeated herself to him since we couldn't group mind link as a pack. Sometimes I wondered just how powerful of a werewolf she was.
"So he grew up without his brother and his father?"
Auri nodded. 'It wasn't ideal. I did what I could to help him. We all did. But his childhood was anything but a happy.'
"You died giving birth to him, so I don't know what you expected." Hector chuckled but I looked from him to Auri, wide-eyed.
"Died? You died?"
She nodded but didn't offer any other details. When I looked back at Hector, he had fallen back again in our steps.
"How did you die?"
Auri's hand came up and touched her throat. Lucy had said she lost her voice and nearly died at the hands of a vampire but I didn't realize she meant she had actually died and they managed to save her.
'I've died a few times over the years. You get used to it.' Her voice was playful, chuckling as she said it. She glanced back at Hector for a moment before looking me in my eyes. 'I've lived a long and not so great life. All I have wanted was for my children, for Vale, to have it easier. I know him being Alpha King won't be easy but I hope with all my heart the two of you will take on the world together.'
Auri beamed up at me, and I nodded. "I'll do my best. Though, I don't think I'm fit for anyone right now."
"You are. One mistake does not define you, Alpha Ezekiel. It's how you decide to move forward after you do." Hector chimed in and I looked over my shoulder. He was smiling.
We made it back to the pack house and I opened the door for them. It sounded like everyone was gathered in the large meeting room and I led Auri and Hector. Opening the door, everyone but Owen and Cory were sitting down. Owen was leaning against the window and Cory was standing next to
him.
"Son, why the hell are you asking us here? Today is a day to mourn a good wolf." My mother was cold and I sighed.
Everyone straightened a little when Auri and Hector stepped in behind me. I stood at the head of the table. Auri and Hector leaned agains the wall behind where I was standing.
Joanne growled. "What are they doing here? They aren't part of this pack, Alpha."
“I have business with them and I figured it would be easier to handle everything at once.”
"First things first, I told the council this already but I am stepping down as Alpha. So that everyone else is the room is on the same page."
My mother smiled. "It's about time. Owen should have been Alpha. You were never strong enough."
I was used to her but I heard Auri behind me growl and I turned, surprised. Her arms were crossed over chest and Hector had a hand on her shoulder. Holding back a smile, I turned back to group.
"Luckily, Owen has now agreed to become Alpha, under one condition."
"Oh? And what's that?" Joanne looked at Owen, narrowing her eyes.
Clearing my throat, I stood up straight and let my Alpha presence fill the room. Everyone started to bare their necks but Hector and Auri. Hector not being bothered by my presence actually surprised me, considering he was a Beta but I didn't need him to. Just the wolves in front of me.
“I, Alpha Ezekiel Silver, hereby strip Joanne Graham, Brett Lawson, Ernest Simmons, Edith Robles, and Marvin Hill of their right to be on the Elder Council. I also hereby disband the Elder Council from now moving forward."
All eyes widened and I heard chuckling behind me. I pulled back a little, feeling the Elders who did hold some power in the pack, weaken. Nodding, I looked at Owen.Content rights by NôvelDr//ama.Org.
"Come forward, Owen Silver."
He stepped forward and I looked around, realizing I forgot a knife. Auri stepped forward, a beautifully carved knife in her hand. She took both of our hands in hers and made a slice for each of us.
"I, Alpha Ezekiel Silver, hereby step down as Alpha of the Silver Sun pack and pass on Alpha to Owen Silver. May your time as Alpha usher in a new era within our pack."
Clasping hands with him, I gasped as I felt the rush of power leave me. Owen's eyes flickered and showed the bright green color of his wolf as he took on the role as Alpha. Letting go of his hand, I stepped back and felt a hand on my back. I knew it was Auri and I took a deep breath. It was finally
done.
